Section 1: discussion

Power is the ability to influence others either positively or negatively. In general power is neutral until used.

Managers want employees to perform at a high level even on the first day of work. Employees often miss the opportunity to demonstrate their skills because they don’t feel they have anything to contribute even though they are qualified for the job. Examine the two areas managers want employees to contribute to on day one and the source of power they can use to demonstrate this skill:

Establish competence and value added. The power base is position power and personal power.

Build strong relationships and networks. The power base is informational power and connection power.

Respond to the following.

For this discussion, imagine you are a new employee. Which area would you choose to work on first: establishing competence and value added or building strong relationships and networks?

Why did you choose this area?

Then identify the specific source of power you will use on the first day: position, personal, information, or connection?

  • Why did you choose this source of power?

Part b 1: respond Carolyn House

If I were a new employee I would prefer to work on reciprocity and knowledge power. This allows me to develop alliances that will provide an interchange of access of information. Understanding that these are professional relationships which is instrumental, these choices would help me grow and develop bonds that could provide strong alliances and networking opportunities that could carry me to other fields of interests. Knowledge creates a level of control for me to be able to have dominion over my own destiny career wise, sometimes we are not afforded that choice. I feel this is a great way to create it for ourselves because enjoying what we do and having the ability to guide our own footsteps makes working environments more rewarding. Reciprocity adds expertise perhaps in a field that I may be curious about or it could be applicable in my current career in some way, it adds building blocks that could lead to other avenues of professional and educational abilities. Professionalism is important to me and I feel this is the most beneficial choice to enhance my level of professionalism in a financial field that is stressful and fast paced and team influenced.

part 2: Respond to ShaneAs a new employee, personally I would choose to establish competence and value add, while not neglecting the relationship building and networking. I want to show that even though I am new, I bring unique skills to the job. Coming in and proving yourself an asset helps establish yourself and gain credibility amongst your peers and leaders above you in the hierarchy. It also shows they made a good decision in bringing you on board.I would choose Information and Connection power initially. I feel Position Power and Personal Power take more time to establish, especially if I’m not being hired on in a Leadership position. Starting to build connections/relationships and gathering as much information as I can, will help to really start for making a good first impression, building hopefully to a positive reputation.
