Jason is a twenty-five-year-old father of Isabella who was diagnosed with the mild intellectual disability when he was five years old. As someone with an IQ of 70, he had difficulties learning how to read and write, which made him discontinue his education at the secondary level since the opportunities for special education was limited in his community. However, the support and care of his parents helped him to learn simple social and problem-solving skills that enabled him to develop a relationship with the mother of his daughter when they were both trainees of a vocational center (NICHCY, 2012). Although his partner did not have the same developmental disability as him, she taught him some of the necessary measures for overcoming the challenges of his condition. According to Jason, the label of intellectual disability has contributed to his growth since he had limited interaction with people and was forced to learn how to be independent, especially at work and when traveling to other parts of the country. In his opinion, the integration of people with intellectual disability in the society requires the commitment of members of their family and community because the difficulties and challenges that they experience in the performance of the activities of daily living can be solved (Health & Wellness, 2017).
