THE IMPORTANCE OF INFORMATION SEARCHING
It is common in business, as in everyday life, to encounter from time to time a situation about which we are relatively uninformed. To understand a situation well enough to decide whether to act on it or leave it alone—and if we are to act, to decide what to do—means we have to seek information about it. All too often the information we possess is about specific incidents or singular events, and is typically out of date or mostly second hand or just the speculations or assumptions of others. We are uninformed sometimes simply because we are new to the situation or have been away from it for a while. Whatever the reason, we realize that we are to some degree uninformed and thus our understanding of the situation is incomplete. Acquiring more and better information does not just happen—we need to proactively make it happen. Knowing what information to seek and how to acquire it is therefore an important, central competency of managers. Without enough of the right kinds of information, analytical understanding and thoughtful action planning are difficult if not impossible to achieve. In the next section we provide a case, “The Central Catering Company,” to demonstrate the information searching process. It is an “iceberg” type case. Recall that iceberg cases are relatively short cases that provide a description of one or, at most, a few incidents, events, perceptions, and/or opinions. Much of the other relevant information, such as historical, contextual, and other related information, is only hinted at, if given at all. We are using an iceberg case to help you learn how to search for information by seeing or finding ideas in the information provided, and using these ideas or sets of ideas to determine what, where, and how additional information might be useful, if acquired. Please read the case twice so that you are familiar with it (as defined in the Section “Becoming Familiar with a Case” in Chapter 5): first swiftly to get a feel for the situation, characters, and prior action, and slowly on the second reading to appreciate the nature and type of information provided. Now, imagine you are a case writer in the field of hospitality management and have made arrangements to gather the information necessary to write one or more teaching cases around the management group of the Central Catering Company located in a large western city. At the present time, the Central Catering Company is attempting to reorganize the physical layout of its Bakery Division. Your task is to understand any issues associated with this reorganization and write a case based on your research. Your general approach for conducting this information gathering includes interviewing the management personnel and observing the situation related to the reorganization. After obtaining permission to do this research from the president of Central Catering Company, you have gone through the ceremonial duties of entering the company and have been introduced to the management group at a recent meeting. You have explained to them something about the process of teaching by cases and the general approach and some of the possible consequences of your research.
