Choose the two primary OI codes that emerge in the song(s). Select a song or two from your “Hip Hop Snob” playlist. Through them, identify at least two Africanisms that support your description of Hip Hop culture, its presence in Black American Music, and its contemporary representations across other musical genres and ethnic communities.
Consider the following questions: In what ways does your song provide examples of the history of hip hop within the context of the assigned OI code from above? How can we frame it as part of the larger Black Aesthetic, its cultural values, and communication styles? How does it work together as part of the art and aesthetics of Hip Hop? What did you learn and how do you understand the codes as critical pedagogical performance?
As primary sources use any films, the class readings, and videos we’ve used in class, and music lyrics. You are required to use any readings from Andrews, Keyes, Maultsby, Levine, and Wilson, along with any additional readings or citations I provided.
