I do believe and agree that a cross-cultural worker can become completely absorbed into a foreign culture, especially if they are desiring that this effect in their life should take place. The more time a person spends in a foreign country, learns more of their language and culture, the more integrated they will become. One good example of this comes from the movie “The Last Samurai” starring Tom Cruise. In this particular movie, the main character finds himself captured by the Samurai in Japan after fighting against them as an American Civil War officer called in by the Japanese Emperor to help train the Imperial Army. During his stay in a small Samurai village, he gradually learns to speak Japanese, learns more about Bushido, and the culture of the Japanese. By the end of the film, he has fully embraced the Japanese way of life and become Japanese himself, despite being a white American man. This movie is a good example of what our readings call “Cultural superiority” which is “the belief that one culture is more enlightened, advanced, civilized, or intelligent than another.” (Howell, 2017)
Scripture teaches that one should respect others and live in peace with them. Romans 12:18 states “If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.” (Holy Bible) This can only be done if a cross-cultural worker is able to view the foreign culture as different, but not in any way inferior to his own. When working with others, it is important to avoid any form of ethnocentrism whether or not one seeks to fully integrate into a different culture than the one he was raised in.
