In “Darkness”, Lord Byron does not offer any specific characters
In “Darkness”, Lord Byron does not offer any specific characters because the remaining individuals in this post-apocalyptic society are merely shells of humans—devoid of life in every sense of the word. By not focusing on developing a character, Byron shows how far gone society is and how the destruction is so vast that even the souls of the living are non-existent anymore. Unlike any similar recent films or series about this topic, there is no desperate attempt at survival in “Darkness”. The world is gone, the drive for survival has been rendered useless and there is no hope for a happy ending. Byron writes, “…no love was left; / All earth was but one thought—and that was death, / Immediate and inglorious” (41-42). If the concept, thought and reality is solely death then the only important character in this piece is the Darkness itself—the humans in this world are merely foreseen casualties because of it.
