What is American Conservatism

What is American Conservatism? What do conservatives believe and why?

Even by 1960, Conservatism was still relatively marginalized within the Republican Party. But that began to change with the presidential nomination of Arizona Senator Barry Goldwater in 1964. Although Goldwater miserably lost the election in 1964, he nonetheless paved the way for the Republican Party to embrace Conservatism by 1968. But, what events made that possible? How did historical events between 1964 and 1968 change America’s ideas about government and permit Conservatism to become more and more mainstream?
