Module 05 Written Assignment – Survival Mindset
Gilmartin’s reading stresses the need for law enforcement officers to possess a survival mindset. In our reading he asks the question, “Are officers really surviving?” Gilmartin states, “Although in many ways officers are winning the battle of street survival, they appear to be fatally losing the battle of emotional survival” (p. 9). Having a survival mindset is key in the law enforcement profession.In a 2 page paper research and discuss the following:

  • Identify the physiological, psychological, physical, and emotional effects of stress in law enforcement.
    • How are each of these areas affected when an officer is involved in a high risk or traumatic incident?
    • How would practicing visualization reduce these effects?
  • Gilmartin states many officers are losing “the battle of emotional survival.” Explain what is meant by that and what can be done to help officers win this battle. What characteristics do you feel are necessary for having a successful survival mindset in law enforcement?
