Definition:
Technology, in general, refers to scientifically developed methods and equipment used for improvement. Stevenson (2021) says, Operations management is primarily concerned with three kinds of technology: product and service technology, process technology, and information technology (IT) (p. 25).
Summary:
I chose the Wall Street Journal article, Reimagine Technologys Role in the Business, by Khalid Kark to see how technology influences operations management and businesses today. Up to this point, technology and operations in the workplace were considered as two separate entities. Recently, Deloitte has started to use technology as a way to unite the different operations of their business and create an integrated environment. Kark (2019) says, A recent report from Deloittes LLPs U.S. CIO Program presents a new approach that reimagines technology as a common thread uniting business and technology objectives and helping those functions effectively collaborate, innovate, and cocreate new sources of value. It is very important in todays world that technology is equally used throughout the operations of a business. Management must be willing to adjust to the changing world of business and use technology to its fullest extent. They must look at the overall picture and be willing to collaborate with each other to provide the best possible result. Kark (2019) states, The new approach envisions the company as a multiple-geared engine in which every gear moves in unison so the engine operates efficiently. If a single gear breaks, the entire enterprise grinds to a halt. Deloittes approach is that each department operates jointly and works together when faced with different external and internal influencers. Kark (2019) says, A combined business-technology strategy can result in a road map for achieving each business opportunity fully aligned with technology capabilities, systems, and investments.
Discussion:
In Chapter 1, the topic of technology is addressed as major influence on operations management. The article discusses the necessity of the incorporation of technology in operations and how to successfully accomplish it. Stevenson (2021) states, Technological innovations in both products and processes will continue to change the way businesses operate, and hence require continuing attention (p. 25). Deloitte is following this strategy by continuing to come up with ways to implement technology in their operations.
