Please choose one discussion prompt below to respond to:
A – Maintaining and Transmitting Culture, Or, B – Analyzing Agents of Socialization. After identifying which discussion prompt you are responding to and making your initial post, be sure to make at least one of your response posts to the other discussion question prompt.
A – Maintaining and Transmitting Culture
This discussion addresses module outcome 1. In this discussion you will discuss how culture (Links to an external site.) [Video, 26:41 mins] is maintained and transmitted within the family context. Culture is the glue that binds society together. Before you begin the activity, make sure that you have read Chapter 3 and viewed the video on culture linked above. Every group that comes together and forms a society develops a culture that is unique to that group. There is some discussion among theorists on the existence of an overall American culture. Some argue that the US is too young and too much of a melting pot to have one overall unifying culture. Others argue that this is true of all nations and not only the US. They argue that family or community culture is often different from the overall culture that the majority of the population shares.
Before beginning this activity, be sure to read the Module Notes and the assigned readings and viewings. Use as much detail from the readings and other learning materials in the module as possible to answer the following questions.
- Identify one thing that your family shares as part of its culture that is indicative of the greater culture in your community.
- Identify one thing that your family does that is different from the greater culture in your community.
- How did these behaviors, both similar and dissimilar, come to be the culture of your family?
- How do these behaviors reflect the culture norms in your family and your community?

B – Analyzing Agents of Socialization.
Childhood
This discussion addresses module outcome 2. In this discussion you will apply the theories of socialization to the concept of family as an agent of socialization. Be sure to watch this video on Primary and Secondary Socialization (Links to an external site.) [Video, 1:45 mins], and read Chapter 4 and the lecture notes before beginning this activity. Theories that examine socialization argue that you learn social behaviors from other actors and institutions in society. This includes family, religion, education, the media and peers. If you are socialized appropriately, you take these lessons and become productive members of society. If you fail to learn these lessons you are “deviant” which can create problems for you (not fitting in), or for society (criminal deviance).
Before beginning this activity, be sure to read the Module Notes and the assigned readings and viewings. Use as much detail from the readings and other learning materials in the module as possible to answer the following questions.
- Pick one social norm that you learned during your childhood.
- Discuss how family, religion, education, the media and peers assisted in teaching you this norm. Use a specific example of how each of these influenced your socialization. For example, “My family taught me how to….”
- Socialization is harder for adults. Do you agree or disagree with this statement? Explain why.
Your initial post should be at least 500 words and must substantively integrate the assigned readings with proper APA (Links to an external site.) style formatting. No plaigarism.
