(andrea) There is always so much change and new information that comes out about special education and autism specifically, I need to stay on top of that, in order to make sure that my staff has the latest information and different techniques to implement in their classrooms. In order to do this I will need to read articles that come out, go to professional development trainings and be on the lookout for new and updated information. I need to put saide at least 30 minutes a day in which I dedicate the time to looking for new ideas and topics. I also need to keep up to date with laws and changes to laws. I have found that if you network and have a group of people with whom you can talk with and share new ideas or practices with you are able to stay up t date more. Working together with other professionals is key in making sure that you are up to date.

(Kim) he best way to stay informed on the changing education system and research is reading. Use those creditable websites that inform on changes to laws or discovers to ways to teach and assess students. When a new trend or intervention is discovered it is our job to research it and understand the strengths and weakness of this new discovery. This research can also include attending workshops or conferences about Autism or programs that are created to benefit students with Autism. The final step, I think that will benefit all Autism specialist or individuals who want to stay informed is build a community of individuals to share ideas with.

(Mariel) In my state we have the Autism Society of Maine which I assume other states have as well. They are constantly posting current research, legislation and debate concerning autism spectrum disorders. As a special educator and autism specialist it is important to stay up to day with the most effective evidence based strategies. Research is being conducted regularly with updated practices. It will be my responsibility to keep up to date with these by attending conferences yearly. Professional development is an integral part of your professional duties in order to stay informed and continue increasing your knowledge to best support your students.
