Here is the prompt:
Topic Exploration Assignment 2 requires you to select a topic related to any topic covered over the course (besides chapters 3 or 4, which were the focus of Topic Exploration Assignment 1), and explore the topic in more detail. Papers must be specifically focused on gender. Examples of possible topics include (but are not limited to): changing names at marriage, intersexuality, androgyny, transgender, brain sex differences, gender constancy, psychodynamic theories, social learning theory, cognitive development theory, varied cultural approaches to fathering, symbolic interactionism, standpoint theory, male generic language, spotlighting, parallel language, polarized thinking, minimal response cues, gendered nonverbal communication (e.g., related to haptics, proxemics, kinesics, paralanguage, territoriality, etc.), cosmetic surgery and cultural ideals for beauty, self-as-object, monitoring, identification, ego boundaries, GLBT parenting, male deficit model, cross-sex friendships, psychological responsibility, the second shift, the mommy myth, dual-worker families, culture of romance, effortless perfection, invisible hand discrimination, Title IX, single sex education, equal pay, FMLA, work schedules, mentoring, glass ceilings, Lilly Ledbetter, mommy track, agenda setting, cyberbullying, portrayal of men or women in media, gendered violence, sexual harassment, or any research finding discussed.
Topic Exploration 2 must include a minimum of three current, scholarly academic sources (this time NOT including the textbook). For most papers/topics, “current” would typically mean roughly the last ten years, however, some topics might warrant older sources, e.g., a historical review of a theory, or investigation of the evolution of a concept. Likewise, the assignment requires that you locate scholarly or academic sources, which will be the general expectation. However, some topics might be so current that the only available sources might not be found in scholarly/journal type sources. So, the requirement for current, scholarly, academic sources could vary given topics selected. All papers require credible sources. Make sure that you have a minimum of three scholarly sources besides the textbook; that is a requirement of the assignment and if you use the textbook, be sure to have a minimum of four sources. Also note that if you use the textbook, it should not be your primary focus. The purpose of the assignment is to explore a topic beyond what is found in the textbook.
Requirements and Evaluation:
Once you have an appropriate topic related to a course concept in COMS 360, you will need to conduct additional research on your topic (beyond the Wood & Fixmer-Oraiz text). Sources to consider include scholarly/academic and credible articles or books. You will summarize what you have learned in a two page (minimum) (three page maximum), typed, double spaced, 12-point font, Times New Roman paper, with standard 1” margins, unjustified. Sources must be cited in text and in a reference list in APA format (see the next page for some guidelines on APA format). Provide ONLY your name in the upper right corner of your paper. Skip a line, and begin your essay. Do not include a title, headings, running head, or any other identifying information. This will allow you maximum space to convey your material. Do not plagiarize ANY PART of your paper.
All papers must be well written, clearly supported, and thoroughly proofread. Papers will be evaluated on content, quality and depth of research, clarity, organization, citation, and style.
