There are several stages to Solution Focused Brief Therapy:

  • One needs to build a relationship with the client. By using active listening skills, the helper gains a clear understanding of the problem. Working with the client, the professional and the client discuss client strengths, as well as reflect upon successful problem solving behavior in the past.
  • The client and helper discuss times when the client was able to be successful in problem solving. The helper and client also begin to discuss possible resources that can aid in helping in their current situation.
  • Goals are established. Client expectations are taken into consideration, and goals are often written down and defined in measurable terms.
  • The helper and client then discuss ways to achieve this goal, emphasizing client success. Homework is assigned that includes interventions that the client can work on outside of the session. Other strategies may include role playing to encourage the development of new and positive goal setting behavior. (Ivey, Ivey, & Zalquett, 2009).

  • Identify the basic assumptions of Solution Focused Brief Therapy. How does this therapeutic approach differ from other approaches that you have explored?
  • What are the six questions that are used to help clients realize goal setting potential and develop possible solutions?
  • Propose some examples of the “homework” assignments that you might give a client. What do you hope for the client to achieve by completing these activities?
  • Discuss possible disadvantages or criticisms of this approach. What type of client or situation might encourage you to explore another problem solving approach and why?
