1.Discuss the conflicting view Europeans held of the New World and its inhabitants. What originally shaped this view and how did this view evolve (or change based on motivations) from the end of the 16th century (1500s) through the first half of the 17th century (1600s)? In your response, give at least 2 specific historical examples (1 each from the colonizing efforts of 2 different European countries) demonstrating this conflicting view and/or how they solidified this perspective one way or the other. 2. Your readings have pointed to significant differences between Native American and European cultures. In your essay, consider how the different perspectives of land use (Native American view of “use rights” versus the English view of “property rights”) complicated these encounters and relationships. In doing so, compare and contrast (at least 2 colonies from 2 different countries) early Dutch, French, English, and Spanish colonization in the New World. Consider what broader historical developments influenced these interactions (market, religion, political rivalries, etc).

A common historical debate regarding slavery revolves around the question of whether slavery (as well as the slaves themselves) influenced the development of colonies in North America or whether the historical events impacted the development of the institution of slavery. Write an essay in which you consider these two historical arguments. Which do you think carries greater weight and why (not personal opinion, but conclusion based on readings). Also, it is possible (and you are welcome to do so) to argue that both more accurately describes the development of slavery in Colonial America. In writing your essay, use two colonies as case studies. Make sure to consider the impact of external and internal developments.

Instructions: The short essay will include references to the readings from the textbook, 1 relevant primary document from your textbook or any provided by instructor as well as content modules or relevant Powerpoint. You are also encouraged to consider information discussed in the Eric Foner’s videos. The short essay should be 650-750 words (post word count at the bottom of the page). It will be evaluated on research, understanding of the material, and writing skills (syntax, grammar, organization, etc). Also, students must cite all information borrowed from any of the above listed sources. If a student does not cite her/his sources, she/he is plagiarizing and, consequently, will receive 0 credit for the assignment. Students are not to use research sources beyond those assigned for this class, thus, doing so will result in a significant reduction in points. Cite all information borrowed throughout the essay in parenthetical format as well as include a works cited page. You may use MLA or Chicago only for citation. Student’s work cited page does not count as part of the word count. As for submitting the essay, students will do so through the assignment window on Webcourses. Students will need to copy and paste the essay into the text box. Credit will not be given for attached assignments. 2 points will be deducted for each calendar day the essay is late for a maximum of 3 calendar days.
