Con: Should the United States government ban the death penalty?

Introduction

  1. The death penalty is currently legal in 31 states, the federal government, and the military. As of October 1, 2016, there were 2,902 people on death row in the United States. The number of people on death row in the United States has decreased over the years, but still remains active in certain states which then are open for any case thrown at them. The big question and debate that circles around capital punishment everyone seems to address and question is: if we’re all human and entitled to life itself, is this fair or too cruel? Do we kill people who kill people? It is a basic right to live given we are all born to live free and accompanied with rights, but it’s the way us as humans go about some circumstances where it can all change. We can decide to kill the monsters who once killed or committed some of the worst crimes, or we can let the monsters grow, learn, understand, and try to blossom from a time in their life and utilize them to our advantage. The flaws we have in our system don’t only lie beneath who these people can learn from their mistakes, but also our mistakes. There are many times where we fail as a government and put this severe life changing capital punishment on the wrong people, who then spend their lives just rotting away for a crime they didn’t commit. The system is flawed in all sorts of directions. In order to grow, we must find a better way of dealing with criminals and sort out if it’s even benefiting us keeping the death penalty, because sometimes the bad may outweigh the good.

  1. The cost of the death penalty system is more expensive than life in prison

    1. Studies conclude that the death penalty system is far more expensive than maximum sentence for life in prison
      1. Because of legal costs, number of appeals, security, and incarceration costs
      2. It is said that over the next 5 years, government will spend 1 billion dollars on capital punishment fundings
      3. “the government spends more taxpayers’ money in handling cases of death row inmates. This is due to the length and complexity of trials, the number or defenders to be hired and the overall process” (green garage)
  1. Wrongful verdicts could send innocent people to death row

    1. If you send an innocent person to death row, the death cannot be reversed. Who will be at fault here? If an an innocent person is sent to death row, there is no justice for either victim
    2. The risk of executing an innocent person can never be eliminated. More than 150 people sent to death row in the U.S. have later been exonerated, and others have been executed despite serious doubt about their guilt. (Amnesty international)
    3. How awful would it be to spend the rest of your life in prison with a death date, for a crime you did not commit? (yeisy will look up several different wrongfully cases where verdicts that were accused who weren’t guilty and it how it played out, and how many cases like that happen)
  2. The Death Penalty is not an effective deterrent

    1. Criminologists surveyed the American Society of Criminology, Winners of the American Society of Criminology Sutherland Award, and, presidents of the American Society of Criminology
      1. Of those surveyed, 78% said that the death penalty in a state does not lower the murder rate
    2. (Kirzten will look into the states that have the death penalty & how much murder rates occur in those states every year & see if it has changed)
    3. It has been shown that the states with death penalty legalized have a much higher murder rate than those who do not have it legalized. What does that come to show? That having the death penalty effective may not be doing what it’s supposed to set out to be doing. It’s not being an incentive for the people commiting crimes, if they’re committing them even more knowing what’s at stake.
