Research Essay:

Each student in English 102 will write a 5-6 page essay that explores, in-depth, about a topic that addresses the prompt below.

The essay will be a thesis-driven argument that addresses the prompt, below, and it should include extensive development of the student’s own thinking and relevant secondary sources researched and cited by the student’s annotated bibliography and Works Cited page.

Students will formally propose their essay—see the attached Proposal Form.

Each essay should address this prompt:

Explore a social, political, or economic topic of your choice and present how and to what extent the idea supports or hinders our society (the United States)? What are the opinions of experts in the field, what is the data saying about the topic, and are there ways in which we could potentially reform/better this topic?

Sources(only sources that can be used are the ones I provide):

The student will include a Works Cited page (MLA format), citing all secondary sources consulted and/or used in the essay. The paper should include relevant information from at least FOUR secondary sources, and all of these sources should appear on the student’s annotated bibliography.
