Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs

For the purpose of this discussion I chose Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs because I do believe that until certain basic needs (deficiency needs) are met some people may not be able to reach the level of self-satisfaction.

Maslow’s hierarchy of needs starts with the psychological level which consists of the “biological” requirements in order for someone to survive. These needs include food, drink, shelter, clothing, warmth, sex, and sleep (McLeod, 2018). It is understood that human services provides a large spectrum of services but as someone involved in this profession I would have to make sure that these needs are met for obvious reasons but also because I believe that without these needs, mental health may become an issue for those lacking them. Is it possible someone’s mental health may not be affected if they lacked the needs in order to survive? I’d say it is definitely possible. However, as someone working in human services I would have to make it a priority to satisfy an individual’s needs at any level in order to preserve their mental health.

Burger (2017) lists the seven basic attachments and the signs of failure associated with each one. The signs of failure starting at the bottom of the hierarchy of needs include feelings such as loneliness, depression, and alienation which can all contributors a negative effect on an individual’s mental health. Therefore, using this theory and applying it to the workplace for me would make sense.

I do believe that achieving the lower needs starting with the psychological level will help motivate someone to move to the next level and it will also be fulfilling to watch someone reach the point of self-actualization knowing that as a worker in human services I was able to see someone grow in this manner.
