Appalachian media stereotypes have always been rampant in all forms of media from print, film, TV, and now the Internet. Go ahead and read over your guidelines in your syllabus for this essay.
This assignment deals with Media stereotypes of Appalachian people and the Appalachian region. We all have heard or witnessed stereotypes of people who live in this region. From inbred hicks, no shoes, no teeth, dumb, stupid, pill heads and whether you are with her or against her Kim Davis. The mass media has always stereotyped the people of this region. Leading the playwright Robert Schenken to say, "The Appalachian people are the last group of people that we can make fun of in this country and get away with it". So, I hope to get some good responses from you all especially if you have lived in this region of Kentucky your entire life.
Now with such programs as the ABC 20/20 special Children of the Mountains, Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia, Buck Wild, Hollywood Hillbillies, Call of the Wildman (The oTurtle Man) the stereotype continues.
