Also Loved Studying Intercultural Reply Two Stude
student 1: There have been an array of topics this quarter that have been super interesting for me. Studying the specifics involved in interpersonal/intrapersonal communication processes and group communication has really opened my eyes to the complexities that come with communicating. I also loved studying intercultural communication, which has allowed me to gain a better understanding on the perspective differences in how people communicate on the basis of cultural backgrounds and foundations.
The most interesting topic this quarter for me has been looking at the different relationships that exist within mass communication and the government’s involvement in censorship (how the first amendment plays a role that conflicts with defining “indecency”). Professor Fang mentioned in his lecture how different countries abide by different rules and regulations on content that can and cannot be produced. It’s fascinating how the variance of released content is so large depending on geographical/geopolitical influences.
This topic has changed the way that I view communication because I can see how aspects of communication are interwoven into a broader picture, and in studying certain areas of communication (like mass communication), it takes a look at how interdisciplinary concepts are inevitably intertwined.
In furthering exploring this topic, I’d like to take courses that involve the studying of “free speech” in America to gain a better understanding of how this affects mass communication and understand the effects that it has on content that is released in this country vs other countries. The study of communication is much more complex than I had originally believed, as it involves an array of disciplines like psychology, geography, and neurobiological.
student 2:
- One of the most interesting topics for me was digital communication. Studying internet mediated communication in a scientific context was very interesting to me, especially learning words for qualities of these digital channels that I hadn’t yet learned the formal terms for, like synchronicity and richness. This was most interesting to me because it is most relevant, especially when COVID-19 has reduced many, many of our interactions into solely online encounters. I also think it is interesting because digital communication seems to be the most dynamic and rapidly changing.
- Learning this topic in the context of this class has caused me to notice certain things that I’ve always seen, but with the difference of now having a word to describe them. For example, when I’m on Instagram, deciding what is good to post or repost to my story, I am aware of the fact that this is important to me because whatever I put on my account has a degree of replicability, and thus I have less privacy if I make a mistake with what I post. Moreover, I’m aware that having people from my family, friend groups, and more professional associations following me means that I have to be aware of this collapse of normally very separated contexts.
- In order to study this more in the future, I would like to take COMM 116 and COMM101, as these seem to be in line with this specific topic of study. I also believe that I would like to conduct studies on the topic, as I feel there are unique aspects of internet communication that are yet to be explored because they are yet to be academically noticed.
