ESSAY ONE TOPIC: WHY WRITE?
George Orwell believes that in order for writers to write well, they must develop a critical awareness of their political beliefs. Joan Didion believes that writers write in order to build a better understanding of the many mysteries in their lives.
Why do you write? What is the value in writing? Can writing help you develop as a person and as a student? Why is it that universities require that their students learn to write academic essays? Does that relate to the purpose that you are in college?
You may want to answer some of the above questions in your essay, but the exact prompt is the following:
In a three to four page MLA Style essay, using your own ideas and at least two author’s (Orwell’s, Didion’s, Baldwin’s) ideas, explain and analyze why you write. Narrow down who are as a writer: e.g. student, songwriter, poet, intrapersonal investigation, business person, goal driven person, etc.
In your discussion, if you quote or paraphrase directly from any other text, please cite according to MLA format. Also, follow these guidelines to build your arguments.
Make certain that your thesis states the topic and asserts something specific and significant about it. Underline the thesis, which should be the last sentence in your introductory paragraph.
Your topic sentences should point backward in that they prove part of the thesis, and they should also point forward in that they are a predictor of what will be discussed in particular paragraphs.
Check for coherence in your paper. Link your ideas together by using transitions and/or inserting phrases or subordinate clauses when appropriate.
Your conclusion should drive home the main idea of the essay and summarize key concepts that you want your reader to take away from your essay.
