The reading assignment for today includes chapters 1-3 of Like Water from Chocolate. Write an informal essay in which you identify and discuss the three aspects of today’s reading assignment that you personally found to be the most unique or different, either in comparison to the other four books we’ve read or your own experience in reading novels in general. You could write about the format of this novel, plot devices, characters, the ways characters are described, moral dilemmas, the novel’s setting or the particular culture described in it–there are other possibilities as well. Give a direct quotation for each of the three aspects, and explain how each quotation demonstrates something unique and different about the book and how this uniqueness or difference affects you as a reader. If you personally feel there isn’t anything unique about this book, discuss three reasons why you feel that way, give a direct quotation as an example for each reason, and explain them. Be sure to write at least 400 words in total.
Grading criteria: Your submission must be nonplagiarized and should provide evidence that you’ve read the assignment closely and understand it. It must also be submitted on time (unless you have a documented excuse) and completely follow the guidelines above in order to receive full credit. Late or short essays or essays lacking in sufficient quotations, specific details, and/or a word count will have points taken off. I don’t count off for grammar or spellirswng with this particular assignment.
