Description of Task:
In this writing task you will write a reflection piece based on the movie The Patriot. Your reflection will consist of
six paragraphs and follow the outline below:
In your introduction, briefly summarize the film, (IE. brief story line, setting, who is the protagonist vs. the
antagonist, etc.), and its connection to the American Revolution.
In your second paragraph you will explain (in your own words) the difference between a patriot and a loyalist.
Support your ideas with specific examples from the movie, as well as with material you learned in class.
Avoid rewriting definitions found in your text, dictionaries or encyclopaedias.
In your third paragraph explain whether or not the character Benjamin Martin, (Mel Gibson’s character) should be
considered a loyalist, a patriot, or neither. Support your ideas with specific examples from the movie, as well as
with material you learned in class. Be very clear in your reasoning.
In your fourth paragraph, evaluate the credibility of this movie. Support your ideas by comparing specific
examples from the movie to references from the two articles provided. For this paragraph, you will reference the
journals provided at least three times and cite them using Chicago style.
In your fifth paragraph determine whether or not historical inaccuracies in movies help or hinder the viewer in
their understanding of history or of historical events. Support your ideas with specific examples from the movie,
as well as with material we discussed in class.
In your conclusion, briefly summarize your own thoughts on the value of this film. (Would you recommend it?
Why? / Why not? For whom would you recommend this movie? Does the movie serve a purpose? For whom?
