Grading Criteriarubricarticle Critique Rubricartic
This assignment is intended to encourage the student to think critically regarding information found in professional journals. Many times our patients will ask our opinion regarding oral health concepts or oral hygiene aids. It is our responsibility to educate patients and to be able to provide sound scientific data that supports our recommendations and treatment plans. It is important to keep up to date on new information throughout our career in order to provide evidence-based patient care and to critique information as to its sound clinical relevance.
1. Choose a topic that is related to topics covered in this class:
(Here is some topics we have covered in class)
Ultrasonic Instrumentation
Air Abrasives
Oral irrigation/chemotherapeutics/medicaments
Intra Oral Photography
Scaling and Root Planing
Alternative Fulcrums
Maintenance Care
A collection of journals will be provided, or you can do your own search. Peer-reviewed journal articles and information from the ADA or FDHA are the most reliable. RDH Magazine is not a peer-reviewed journal. Others to consider are: Journal of Dental Hygiene, Access, Journal of Periodontology, Dimensions, Journal of Evidence-Based Dental Practice, and JADA (J of the American Dental Assoc)
2. Give a brief introduction, then summarize findings presented in the article
3. State your opinion on the strengths and weaknesses of the article and the author
Is the author credentialed and reliable? Are there any conflicts of interest identified based on the author’s credentials or affiliations? Check for reliable references and if studies were done, critique the methodology: was the sample size large enough and randomly selected in order to be carried over to represent the general population? In your opinion is the information reliable and evidence-based? Are the references quoted reliable, and is the information consistent with the class information and textbooks?
4. In your opinion, is the information reliable enough to be clinically relevant /can it be applied to the clinical practice of dental hygiene? Support your opinion by stating why or why not.
5. Format/Length: APA format with 1 inch margins, double-spaced, and 12 point Times New Roman font. Length: 2-4 pages (not including title, abstract, and reference page). APA format requires an Abstract, Running Head, In-text citations, and a Reference Page. Please use FSW’s writing center or “Owl Purdue” website for reliable APA format resources. There is also a handout provided above that summarizes APA format. Your paper should be organized with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. This assignment also includes a brief (5 minute) presentation of findings to the class.
