Human services have developed throughout the course of human existences, from pre-civilized societies of hunters and gathers, to modern social programs that currently work to serve the needs of today’s population. By analyzing the changing demographics and the development of the social programs to serve the most groups, the political influence on the scope and potential of social programs, and the increasing need for highly knowledgeable human service professionals human services as an industry can impact the results of their efforts by creating efficiencies and effectiveness. This is essential as the resources that human service programs depend on can be volatile due to changing of societal values and the political affiliation of those who are in charge of allocating resources.
Organizations and advocacy groups that are lobbying and working to serve people need to understand the past and current climate of human service organizations to ensure support and funding of the future needs of a changing society. While there are many ideas about what the scope of human services should be, it is idea that human services as an industry serve a wide range of needs. By serving the different types of needs as described on Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs human services can help the widest groups of individuals in our communities, making society more productive and abled. (Burger, 2018) Some of the changes in the demographic of our communities are the rate of poverty, racial and ethnic profiles, and age groups. 2018 was the fourth consecutive year that the United States saw a reduction of the total number of individuals in poverty. The total decline was 3 percentage points. (Semega, Kollar, Creamer, & Mohanty 2018) As poverty is declining the basic needs, which Maslow deems the physiological needs, will shift to other needs higher up on the hieracrchy. In the next couple decades trends will show the ethnic minorities become majorities. We will also realize and steadily increasing aging society. (Burger, 2018) These changes warrant us looking at the effectiveness of service to these groups as resources and effort should shift along with societies’ demographics to have the most effective human service mix. Groups who advocate and lobby for the resources should explore and understand the impact of current services and the need for expansion into the programs who serve these groups in our population. By understanding the challenges in providing services, the impact on the political climate on resources, they can be better prepared and organized to meet the challenges and changes of our population with dynamic and well-planned solutions.
An analysis into the future of human services will also bring to light that the role of the human services worker needs to change to reflect the needs of society. We have seen this with the scope of the generalized human services worker widening to include mental health services, crisis intervention, and preventative programs. With the growing need for more proficiently trained individuals we have seen society respond by universities and colleges creating a variety of training courses and degree programs designed to educate the next generation of human service providers. Advances in many technologies have allowed for the creation of software and tools for the human services worker to expand their efficiencies and better serve clients and communities. (Burger, 2018) By exploring the effectiveness of different approaches to preparing our human services workforce to meet needs of society managers and planners in human services, along with those planning to enter the field can properly implement the correct actions and tools to strengthen the capabilities of their workforce.
