Part I Short Identifications (50%)

First, from each of the chapters you have read so far (chapters 1-6 in Spielvogel, or 1-5, and 7 in Hanes), select and simply list the 5 vocabulary terms (i.e. the most important concepts, technical terms, people or events) that you think every student of world history should know after reading that particular chapter. This will give you a total of 30 vocabulary terms that will constitute your Master List.

Next, from your Master List, select the top 10 most important vocabulary terms that you would want your students to remember if you were teaching this course, and for each one write a short paragraph explaining who or what it was, when, where, and why it was historically significant, and why it is so important that it belongs on your top ten list.

Part II Essay (50%)

In a concise, well-written essay answer ONE of the following long essays.

Question 1. Compare the role of the environment, both physical and human, in the initial rise and subsequent development and evolution (political, technological, economic, social and cultural) of civilizations in Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Greece. Be explicit and use specific examples to illustrate your arguments. HINT: be sure to discuss the relationship between climate change and sedentary and non-sedentary peoples where appropriate.

OR

  1. Use the concepts of the “insecurity index” and “identity” to explain the historical development and interaction of Greek and Roman civilization from the end of the Dark Age in Greece to the beginning of the Principate in Rome. Be specific and give examples to support your arguments. Be sure to explain not only military and political development, but also social and cultural development (such as religion and philosophy) and their interactions where appropriate. [HINT: Remember that ‘development’ means change over time – i.e., how and why did Greek and Roman civilization first emerge, and subsequently evolve – politically, technologically, economically, socially and culturally?]
