This is the discussion question that need response:
Select and describe your organization
The company I selected was Wal-Mart, of which I was employed with several years back. Wal-Mart is a multinational American retail corporation, which is comprised of consumer goods and grocery items; it also is made up of hypermarkets and Sam’s club. The company is the world’s largest private employer, which employs 2.2 million people. The company was founded by Sam Walton back in 1962 and was family-run until 2014 now; the company is run by a board of directors. The founder’s vision for Wal-Mart was to sell a lot of products at low prices, and profits were secondary to customer satisfaction.
Problems
Wal-Mart has a multitude of issues such as low wages, lousy health coverage, profit sharing, lack of supervision, overloading workers, and no unions allowed. I see reports that state that Wal-Mart employees received on average $10.00 an hour back in 2006, but that is not the case here in Alabama, I started out making only $8.25 an hour back in 2014. Employees receive raises each year, which amount to only $0.50 an hour more. Healthcare coverage is for full-time employees, and part-time employees have to wait a year before they can get healthcare. Profit-sharing is non-existent unless you are a manager. Full-time employees receive about $300 each year in profit share; whereas the store manager can receive up to $10,000 in profit shares. When employees are assigned to an area to cover, one many see a manager about three times during an eight-hour shift. During most shifts, employees may have to cover multiple areas, or employees are held over their shifts to complete tasks. The very first thing a new employee is told is that Wal-Mart does not have a union, and if a union representative approaches you after work, you are required to report it to management. Union talk is discouraged at Wal-Mart.
Changes Needed
I see that Wal-Mart has raised its minimum wage to $10.00 an hour now, which as a step in the right direction. Healthcare needs to be available to all employees upon being hired, no matter if they are full or part-time. Profit-sharing needs to be better distributed among its employees. However, managers should still get a more significant piece of the pie, so to speak, because their jobs entail a lot more detail and accountability. Managers need to take a step back and follow the example of the company’s founder and put employees and customers first instead of sales and profits. I am not sure if unions are a good thing or not, but unions can help protect employee’s jobs, get wage increases, and prevent the company from firing a person for minor things.
