The Affordable Care Act (ACA) consist of many important elements in relation to the community and public health. Some of the important elements are, strengthening community health center by allocating new founding for the construction and expansion of community health center. It expands insurance coverage that will impact how public health departments offer clinical services, for example Governmental public health agencies currently providing clinical services may transfer cases to private sectors, such as routine childhood vaccinations. The Affordable Care Act increase payment of health care providers in the rural communities because 68% of underserved communities across the nation are in the rural community as they often find it difficult to attract and retain medical professionals (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, 2015). With the Affordable Care Act, Public health services can reach more people by creating programs and services such as, home visiting and other maternal child health programs and specialized behavioural health services are made available to the general population, in addition to programs on prevention and protection. ACA make investments that come in the form of new regulatory requirements related to coverage of clinical preventive services without cost sharing, a fundamental shift in the relationship between health insurance and clinical preventive care. Affordable Care Act is the most significant overhaul of the health care industry in the USA, covering every aspect of healthcare including mental health, care for seniors, children’s health, women’s health, and care for our nation’s most needy people professionals (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, 2015).
Health care is a basic human right and ACA has given all Americans the opportunity to have the much need health care. American Academy of Nursing and other Nursing organizations, strongly supports the effort to reform the health care system in the USA. Nurses been in front line of the health care system have a big role to play in the implementation of the ACA law. Nurses are required to assume a more active role in patient care, as well as in participating in forums where policy discussions are debated and decisions are made. It is also important that nurses become involved in health care reform at the individual, community, and state-wide level. Nurses are required to be more informed about ACA, to enable them well educate their patients about the provisions of this ACA laws and explain these new benefits to their patients for them to access both insurance coverage and health services (America Nurses Association, 2016).
