Bioethics refers to ethical issues in medicine and the life sciences that are a result of advances in technology. Principalism is the “four principle” approach established by Tom Beauchamp and David DeGrazia as the framework for bioethics. These four principles are Respect for Autonomy, Nonmaleficence, Beneficence, and Justice.
Respect for autonomy is a principle that requires respect for the decision-making capacity of the persons involved. The nonmaleficence principle requires that people will not cause harm to others. Beneficence principles require that people prevent harm, provide benefits, and balance benefits against risks and costs. Justice principles require fair distribution of benefits, risks, and costs.
If I were to rank these principles in order of importance, I would rank them as respect for autonomy for being the most important because when you respect someone, you want to treat them right and protect them and they have right to make their own decision especially when speaking about medical care. We respect their wishes, living will, or any form of their advance directive or POA. Beneficence being the second most important, then nonmaleficence and the last would be justice. I believe that when you respect the person then you would want to do no harm to the person. Beneficence is the second most important because when we do good onto others. “Love thy neighbors as yourself (Mathew 22:39).” I chose beneficence over maleficence as being the second most important because I believe just because you’re preventing harm doesn’t mean you’re necessarily doing good. Although preventing harm does not mean doing good, it is still important to prevent others from harm or not causing them any harm. I placed maleficence, justice, after beneficence because I believe they are a result of beneficence. If you do good onto someone, you are preventing them from harm, representing them or standing up for them when they are misrepresented or mistreated, and you also respect their values, beliefs, and decisions.
The four parts of the Christian Biblical Narrative are: creation, fall, redemption, and restoration. I believe the highest ranked principle according to this narrative w
