1) The key idea that stood out to me the most was number three: For thinking to be of high quality, we must routinely assess it. I think we apply this without thinking most of the time. You just have to stop and think about what you are thinking. Ask yourself questions about what you understand and think clearer, more precise thoughts. Stop and check your thinking using all the criteria. If we strive to improve out thinking we can achieve a higher-quality of thinking in life. Focus on the clarity, precision, accuracy, relevance, logicalness, and the breadth of thinking and you can achieve you goal.

2) The authors of our textbook say, “Consistently high-quality thinking routinely assesses itself for flaws and then improves itself by replacing low-quality thinking with higher-quality thinking: (Paul & Elder, 2012, p. 379).

How can you replace low-quality thinking with higher-quality thinking? And why would we want to?

3) The three ideas that help us grow as strategic thinkers are, thoughts, feelings, and desires are interdependent, there is a logic to this, and you can figure it out and for thinking to be of high quality, we must routinely assess it. The one that stood out to me the most is number three, for thinking to be of high quality, we must routinely assess it. I think it’s important to always think with high quality, if we use high quality thinking all the time we get used to it and it eventually will replace low quality thinking in every situation. We learn how to improve our thinking if we routinely apply intellectual standard to our thoughts. I apply this in my every day life, I always want to use a high-quality thinking and work to the best of my ability.

4) I have learned a lot about myself and egocentrics during this class. I always tend to go straight for my feelings, thoughts, or ideas and not always considering others opinions. Since taking this class, I have been actively trying to consider other’s opinions and sides of the situation as well as my own and coming up with a logical solution. I like the idea of number 10, humans are socio centric animals. The strategy that it lists has some questions to ask yourself thinking about a group you belong to, therefore you are not only thinking of your responses and ideas but also listening to other’s. I think this is a great way to overcome egocentrics.

5) In this chapter, Paul and Elder (2012) note: “Reaching an advanced stage in thinking may take years. Many variables affect evolution in this direction. The most important variables are motivation, commitment, and regular practice” (p. 404).

Out of the three variables listed, which one do you think will be the hardest for you to maintain as you continue on your journey as a critical thinker? Why?

6) Out of the three variables, motivation, commitment and regular practice I think the hardest one to maintain on my journey as a critical thinker is going to be motivation. I think that motivation is going to be more difficult because sometimes I have a bad habit of just making a quick decision. I need to constantly motivate myself to think outside the box, analyze each option and dig deeper into the problem. To be a critical thinker I believe that motivation is the starting point. In my opinion you must be motivated in order to be committed to something and practice it on a regular basis.

7) In this very short video, the narrator begins by identifying six skills of critical thinking. He explains them through the eyes of a critic and states they are, knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis, and finally, evaluation.

What skill or skills covered in this video will you work on as part of your plan for becoming an advanced thinker?

8) The skills that I work on as part of my plan to become a better advanced thinker knowledge. When it comes to trying to learn about a topic, I do the bare minimum to gather information. Sometimes I draw conclusions that are purely based on what someone has told me and not what I found out about the topic. I feel that this can lead me into a habit of having others think for me instead of it being this is what they told me, but this is what I researched and found out. I have to learn how to look into things on my own, so I do not get lead down the wrong path.
