Culture/Diversity Experience (2 clinical hours)

For this assignment, you are given four options for participating in an experience that is designed to illustrate certain aspects regarding culture and/or diversity. A description of each experience is provided below. You need to complete ONE of the four experiences listed.

  1. Attend one meeting, event, or activity of a cultural organization. You cannot have attended a meeting, event, or activity for this organization before. NOTE: Get faculty approval of the organization meeting choice beforehand.
  2. Get your faculty’s approval for a clinic site to visit. Then, visit a clinic in an underserved community. Speak with a nurse there about his/her experience treating patients of different diversities in this area. NOTE: Get faculty approval of the clinic choice beforehand.
  3. Imagine you are currently working in a minimum-wage paying job and do not have means of transportation other than public transit. You need to improve your diet as part of your diabetes self-management and want to purchase the following items from the grocery store: milk, eggs, broccoli, carrots, potatoes, peppers, apples, lettuce, olive oil, and chicken. You also need toothpaste, dental floss, shampoo, paper towels, cat litter, and Tylenol. Given your rent and utilities, you only have $50 for this trip to the grocery store. Under these conditions, you are to use the local transit system to visit a grocery store to purchase the items you need (if there is not a mass transit system available in your community then choose another avenue such as a cab, Uber, or family/friend vehicle). As part of the experience, you will need to document the cost of the items you need to purchase and discuss this in your reflection.
  4. You recently lost your job and need to apply for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. For this exercise, complete the application (Microsoft Word document can be found online) according to your current living arrangements and as if you pay all your bills independently (e.g., you do not receive family assistance). Assume that the others living in your home are dependent upon your income. Only provide information for up to five people in the application. You can make up the names, social security numbers, and birth dates of those living in your home. In addition to completing the SNAP application, you will need to briefly visit your local Family Support office and discuss your observations. If choosing this option, you are to upload both the reflection and SNAP application. Only choose this exercise if you have not ever received SNAP benefits. To find the Family Support office in a Kentucky county go to https://prdweb.chfs.ky.gov/Office_Phone/index.aspx

If outside of Kentucky then go to your state’s Department of Public Health webpage.

After the completion of the experience, you are to write a reflection in a separate Word document that discusses the following-

  • A brief summary of what you did for the experience.
  • What were some of your thoughts about this experience? Were you comfortable in your surroundings?
  • What were some of your observations regarding the experience? Did you see what you expected? Was anything unexpected?
  • How did the experience contribute to how you think about culture and/or diversity?
  • Based upon your experience completing this activity, how do you think this will impact the way you practice nursing?

This assignment should be at least 500 words, use 12 pt Times New Roman font, be double-spaced, and have 1 inch margins. A title page and reference page are not necessary.
