1 SOFT SKILLS CHALLENGE ASSIGNMENT: Ted Talk Review-Ethics

Ted Talk Review Presentation

Directions: Select one of the Ted Talk videos viewed in class. Which one resonates the most with you and why? Listed below are the videos in case you wish to review them for reference. Next, prepare a 2 1/2 to 3 minute presentation in powerpoint that you will deliver to the class at our next session that does the following.

1. Provides a brief summary of the video

2. Discusses three main points from the video and explain why you found those ideas most applicable or interesting.

3. Explains how could you apply those three principles in your current or future work life.

4. You may have speaking notes but Power Points will not be permitted nor required.

5. You will be graded on content and clarity of organization, nonverbal delivery and professionalism, and verbal presentation. Time limit grade deductions will be assessed. (See #6.)

6. If your presentation reaches the 3 minute mark and you have not concluded, you will be stopped and your grade will reflect that you did not complete your presentation. If your presentation is under the required 2 1/2 minute mark, your grade will reflect that your presentation did not reach the minimum time limit. Therefore, it is imperative that you time and practice your presentation. Business presentations often have set time limits that must be met. Therefore, learning how to do this, and that this requires much practice, is key.

Video 3: Legal vs Ethical Liability: A Crisis of Leadership and Culture

Professor Fugate argues that leaders at all levels and across industries need to focus on ethical liability above and beyond legal liabilities for themselves and their organizations. Ethical liability tests the true character of a leader and determines the character and quality of an organization’s culture. He illustrates this point in the context of higher education, where he contends a lack of accountability has led to a crisis of leadership and culture. Fugate uses scandals in college sports as common examples of a pervasive and larger problem of university leadership (at all levels) that fails to meet its ethical liabilities. He outlines a number of potential causes for the patterns of unethical behavior in higher education and also provides a few suggestions on how to overcome the challenges of this crisis.

2 SOFT SKILLS CHALLENGE ASSIGNMENT Part I: Self-Management & Stress Paper and Short Presentation

This week your soft skills challenge is focused on you and establishing stress management techniques. In business and in your personal life, having a few positive methods of handling stress levels is absolutely essential to maintaining your mental as well as physical well-being. The previous homework exercises helped you to identify some of your triggers. The video regarding stress techniques and management offered suggestions but everyone handles stress differently.

Directions: This week’s soft skills challenge is to relax! I know. It’s probably one of the coolest assignments you’ve ever had to do, right? But, it’s also one of the most important and personally impacting lessons you need to learn. (And, I’m guessing you probably need this at this point in the semester.)

NOTE: You are NOT to tell me what you typically do or what you have done. I want you to identify and actually DO these activities. Discussion of what you have done in the past will receive a 0 and…increase your stress level.

You are to identify three different means of personally relaxing that you can draw on in the future. Then, I want you to try each of them this week then fill in the questionnaire below. There is no right or wrong answer (as long as it’s ethical, legal, and moral *chuckle*). Also, you MUST do something. Discussing something you have done in the past or what you normally do does not count. You must actually take time to do this assignment or you will receive a 0…which will add even more stress to your situation.

  • Maybe it’s a long drive into the country or the highway just to get away.
  • Perhaps it’s hanging out with friends at a local pub.
  • Take a long hot bath with classical music.
  • Working out to burn up adrenaline and get those endorphins moving.
  • Perhaps curling up on the couch with a horror flick, romcom, or mindless surfing on YouTube.
  • Watching a couple of hours of sports.
  • Calling your family or best friend to just talk.
  • Learn a new hobby or pick up one you used to love but haven’t made any time for.

You can do anything! But, not having a few go-to stress management tools in your toolbox is dangerous. So, enjoy. And, I can’t wait to see what you do.
