Class and Professor,
According to Burke and Barron (2014), the decision-making process can be a step by step method that includes the following elements in the process: determining the objectives, responsibilities and authority, the decisions needed, applicable information, the actions needed, and then providing instructions to the appropriate people (p. 338). In my experience, decisions are often made using this process, but it describes a typical progression that works when there is time to move through each step methodically. I have also used the decision tress analysis with success, especially when there are multiple paths to follow, and you only have time to choose the best option.
Often, in a fast-paced environment or when working in stressful situations, a project manager and the team will not have the time to work through the stepped order alone. Having a project team helps the decision-making because the team can come together and support each other using a phased process or decision tree to arrive at an effective decision. Additionally, the project manager needs to be in a position to help make informed, prompt decisions, or to work with the team to get more information. According to Burke and Barron (2014), “The project manager needs to cut across organizational lines to coordinate and integrate specific resources located in the functional departments” (p. 62). Project managers that are supported by the organization are in a better position to ensure the decision-making process is more efficient, and therefore the project runs smoother.
