ENG 105: Introduction to Literature

Paper #1 Assignment

Final draft:

  • 4-5 full pages,
  • double-spaced,
  • MLA format (see page 1111),
  • Works Cited page that includes at least three sources (MLA format),
  • examples from each of the texts you have chosen (at least two from each).

(Please note:“Full page” means to the bottom of the page.)

Refer to Chapter 29 (begin with page 1098: Develop Your Argument)

Assignment Topic: Many of the readings we’ve read so far this semester deal with people who feel pressure to live up to some standard of “proper” behavior in a particular social, cultural, and/or political context. Each of these people must deal with specific consequences for deciding to conform or rebel. No matter which path they choose, there’s a price to be paid as a trade-off for whatever they gain.

Using the “Hero’s Journey” as the frame work for your first paper, I’d like you to address the following questions:

What do we gain when we conform to expectations of us?What do we lose? When is either conformity or rebellion the better choice to make? Why? What part of the “journey” is the most difficult for the characters of the stories you have selected? Why?

Readings: The mini-lecture “The Hero’s Journey” is the primary text for this paper. In other words, the major part of your paper will be using examples from the “The Hero’s Journey” as the basis for your thesis (the main point you want your reader to understand after reading your paper). You will then choose any two additional stories we’ve read so far this semester for a total of three works of literature (plus the mini-lecture) that you will use to construct this paper. So, your Works Cited page should include the following MLA entries:

  • “The Hero’s Journey” (required text)
  • Two additional short stories from that we’ve read so far
  • Video clip “The Hero in Modern Life” (optional, but there are good ideas in this clip!)

Remember to ground your argument in specific examples from the readings that you quote and analyze in order to make your argument.
