Assignment Prompt
Due: 8/30 at 11:59pm
Please watch and take some notes on the Adichie TED Talk (Links to an external site.), and then respond to the following prompt.
In Chimamanda Adichie’s TED Talk she explores the concept of the single story, claiming, “The consequence of the single story is this: It robs people of dignity. It makes our recognition of our equal humanity difficult. It emphasizes how we are different rather than how we are similar.” (Adichie, 13:45). In a 450+ word paper, please analyze the concept and consequences of the single story, responding to the following questions:
- How does Adichie define the concept of the “single story”? Why do you think this concept is significant?
- How does the single story “make our recognition of our equal humanity difficult” (Adichie, 13:45)? What are the larger consequences here? What happens when single stories dominate?
- What are some examples of single stories in your life? These could be single stories told about you/a community you belong to, single stories you have believed about a community/group, or single stories you see being told about a community/group in the news?
- How might we begin to reject the single story? Why is this kind of work so imperative?
- Feel free to extend your paper beyond the above questions if you have more you want to analyze!
