Creating Equitable, Healthy, and Sustainable Communities

The process used to build an equitable, healthy, and sustainable community is a collaborative approach of various stakeholders examining, analyzing, and implementing regulations that contribute to improving the population’s health. A Sustainable community is an act of sustaining resources that maintain a healthier life, characterized by various factors, such as the environment, the economy, and society. An example that contributes to a sustainable community is energy conservation and waste reduction, which results in a healthy community because it increases air and water quality. Energy conservation is a factor of sustainable communities because having renewable and clean energy, such as solar energy, hydro energy, and wind energy, promotes clean air and water quality. The use of renewable clean energy reduces the need for other energy resources that contribute to greenhouse gas effects, such as burning coal and gas. Waste reduction is another factor of sustainable community because proper disposal of waste prevents air and water pollution but reduces the amount of waste that can accumulate by reusing and recycling, which prevents landfills and, etc., that contribute to human and environmental health risk. An equitable community is an act of proving accessibility, stability, equity, affordability, and safety to its residents (EPA,2020; EPA,2020).

Environmental stewardship

Environmental stewardship is the act of sustaining and taking responsibility and actions against human activities that affect the natural environment. An example of strategies for environmental stewardship used in community engagement to build sustainable communities is creating recreational parks, including trails, bike routes, etc. Also, creating protected areas containing endangered species or restoring degraded areas, such as marshes and wetlands. These acts are a form of conservation of preventing the destruction of the natural environment, which occurs because of population growth (National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, 2020).

Challenges and benefits of community engagement

A challenge to community engagement is a potential conflict caused by disagreement and failure to achieve inclusiveness, open-mindedness, and mutual agreement. However, community engagement creates room for new ideas, and diversity and a cohesive and supportive environment.
