Prompt: Identify the two major components of social structure (status and roles) and explain how the United States’s response to the COVID-19 threat has modified each one. Then, use Conflict Theory to explain how race and ethnicity relate to the threat. Use examples from the reading below to support and illustrate each part of your explanations.

Examples:

  • COVID 19 Coronavirus (COVID-19) is an illness caused by a virus that is spread through face-to- face interaction. The symptoms can range from none to severe illness. Persons who have serious underlying medical conditions are at higher risk for more severe illness. It is a new coronavirus that has already spread throughout the world; the United States is one of the countries with the most cases. Some state governments have chosen to open public schools in the fall and some governments have chosen not to. Within the United States, there has been great change in the day-to-day, social routine (i.e. social distancing, face-masking, home isolation, etc.)
  • Public K-12 school districts around the country have chosen to deal with the pandemic in different ways. Some have chosen to return children back to their school in the fall and some have chosen to go online using distance-learning practices.
  • According to the Center for Disease Control:

a non-Hispanic American Indian or Alaska Native persons have a hospitalization rate approximately 5 times that of non-Hispanic white persons,

b non-Hispanic black persons have a hospitalization rate approximately 5 times that of non-Hispanic white persons,

c Hispanic or Latino persons have a hospitalization rate approximately 4 times that of non-Hispanic white persons.
