Instructions and Assignment for Paper 6: Writing an analytical/interpretive paper

Write a paper of about 750 – 900 words. Use standard format and number pages (upper right- hand corner)

You will be given an essay to analyze and interpret.

Your paper must follow this outline and contain these elements:

  • The title, author, brief summary, and an interpretation of the meaning of the essay.
  • Identify and discuss the primary purpose and the secondary purpose (if there is one) with examples including appropriate quotes from the essay.
  • Identify and discuss the patterns evident in the essay with examples including quotes.
  • A conclusion which:
    • Sums up the main points.
    • Restates and elaborates on (in new words) the main idea, and
    • Evaluates the essay – how well it succeeds in its purpose (or purposes) through the patterns used.

Hints and reminders:

The first sentence of the first paragraph must include the title and the author and a concise statement of what the essay is about (its topic). Remember an essay title is in quotation marks and any punctuation after the closing quotation mark goes inside the quotation mark. The rest of the first paragraph is a summary of the essay followed by a statement of its thesis or central idea (what the author is saying about the subject).

Your section on purpose may be one or more paragraphs depending on whether there is a secondary purpose. Remember when you state a purpose you are making an assertion or claim which you must then support from your reading of the essay including direct quotes to illustrate.

The section on patterns should present them either in order of most important to least or the reverse, the least to most. Again, when you identify a pattern you are making an assertion which you must support with examples and quotes.

Your final paragraph should provide an expanded statement or further interpretation of the essay. Do not forget the evaluation which should be based on objective criteria not just subject opinion.
