Epistemological Knowledge Indigenous Knowledge
I need someone who is knowledgeable about the Indigenous course. You need to choose 1 (one) of the following 3 questions—do not attempt to answer all three questions!
For all essays, choose two works from the yellow list above, and at least one work from the works outlined in blue. If you find it more conducive to your thought processes to use two from the blue and one from the yellow lists, that’s fine!
1. In the Fourth National Climate Assessment Report the authors note that, “[w]hile mitigation and adaptation efforts have expanded substantially in the last four years, they do not yet approach the scale considered necessary to avoid substantial damages to the economy, environment, and human health over the coming decades.” How do you see ontological and epistemological knowledge systems shifting in the advent of science-based predictions of future living conditions for all species? How might a better understanding of “ontological” and “epistemological” knowledge systems help humans make the transition(s) to the “scale considered necessary to avoid substantial damages” in and as the future?
2. Draw upon the readings to clarify what you know of the relation between ontological and epistemological systems of knowledge: what are the key differences between these types, or components, of knowledge systems? Provide evidence of the ways in which our own knowledge systems function, or are structured, from your observations; you can use your everyday interaction with products, people, media sources and devices, etc. What, if any, weaknesses in these knowledge systems does your own analysis and observation identify, and how might knowledge systems be modified or re-designed to address the limitations you identify?
3. In the IPCC reports as in the Fourth National Climate Assessment Report, much attention is paid to “mitigation.” How does the definition of “mitigation” map out, and then, suggest additional dimensions or components of, an entire ontological and epistemological world view? What are the limitations of the knowledge produced by these ontological and epistemological systems for understanding humans’ place and interaction with the world at large? What strategies of knowledge building would you suggest to move to a more inclusive sense of ontological and epistemological knowledge systems? If you want to move in this direction, you can use this question to focus on key dimensions of liberally based democracy that the current, predominant knowledge systems seem to threaten, now and in the near future.

Use close reading techniques in your answer—quoting directly from sources you choose, and wording/articulating the significance of the words you have quoted for your reader(s). This technique helps you stay analytical in your approach, and it can help you unlock the complexity of your own thinking. This technique or skill can also help you avoid falling into overgeneralizing when you express your viewpoint.
