Watch the video in the link above. After watching the segment, write a two-page paper on what you think about the fact that 95 percent of all criminal convictions are the result of plea bargains. Does our legal system encourage innocent defendants to admit to crimes they did not commit? What can be done differently? What about their right to a speedy and public trial as guaranteed by the Sixth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution? Is it fair to the victim when his/her assailant pleads guilty to a lesser crime and receives a lesser sentence? Should prosecutors only seek plea agreements for less serious crimes? State why?
