RIGOR Assignment Reliability and Validity

This assignment will help you understand the concepts of reliability and validity, to research, and evidence. It will help you see the application of the concepts in published research reports. Additionally, it is helping you acquire the skill of precision writing. Precision writing is foundational to graduate writing; it requires clarity and conciseness (brevity while including all essential information and no superfluous detail).  For this assignment you will find an article (often you will need 2) that reports information about reliability and validity (look for the types covered in class).

Reliability/Validity Assignment Essential components:

  1. Provide a definition/description of a form of reliability. Please cite a credible source, but do not use a direct quote.
  2. Locate a published research report that includes the use/presentation of information related to the type of reliability (or validity) you are presenting.
    1. Search CINAHL for research and reliability and research and validity. You may have to present 2 articles as one may not have all the information you need.
    2. Select one article of interest for reliability and one for validity (you may find you need 2 articles, but if all is covered in 1 article, that is fine).
    3. Include a header to identify the reliability information.

      1. Provide a definition/description of a form of validity. Please cite a credible source, but do not use a direct quote.
      2. Provide a description/summary of the validity information included in the published report.

Formatting Rules:

  1. Your Reliability and Validity sections are each limited to one page. (Note that your cover page and reference list are not counted in this limit).
  2. Review APA Style Manual for the format of the cover page. Use the student paper format and add a running head.
  3. Review APA Style Manual for format regarding levels of headings. At minimum, use a header for each topic (i.e., one for Reliability and one for Validity)
  4. Review APA Style Manual for format references, use this format to present references.
  5. Note: APA now requires 1 space after each sentence.

Grading Notes:

The rubric is in the syllabus.  Do note:

  1. Do not use direct quotes in your posting.
  2. Cite journal articles, or your text, not webpages or blogs.
  3. Provide citations for definitions and the research study article. All citations must adhere to APA requirements.
