“What Is Feminism?”

The questions you’ll ask of others are: What is a feminist? Are you a feminist? Why or why not?” “What is one pressing gender issue that concerns you today?”

Interview five people of various backgrounds/identities if possible (age, sex, educational level, race, class, sexual preference, religion). Begin by asking if you can record their responses.

First, ask each person what, in their view, feminism is and what is a feminist? Start with either question to get the conversation going.  Then, ask your interviewees if they identify themselves as feminists. (Are you a feminist? Why or why not?) Also, make note of any demographic information you can ask respondents comfortably–not intrusively– such as gender, age, race, sexual orientation, marital status, religion. This is not necessary to know but it sometimes is interesting in reviewing various responses.
Finally, ask your interviewees what is one pressing gender issue of the day that impacts womens and mens lives and gender–something that concerns them or interests them.
In your paragraph(s) about the responses you heard, refer, where possible, to direct statements made. If you can’t record the interview, you can take quick notes to help you remember.
Either before or after the interviews, in a separate paragraph, ask yourself and answer the very same questions.
For a conclusion, comment on what you have learned from our reading (“Five Myths Associated with Feminism”) that teach us about feminism as a social movementwhat it REALLY isas compared or contrasted to how it is often regarded by the publicthat is, according to your random sampling of five people. How, if at all, do the responses you heard reflect how the feminist movement and feminists themselves are stereotyped in our culture?
