Application of Neuroscience and Interpersonal Neurobiology to a Case Study

Read the following case study and write a case conceptualization from the perspective of IPNB. How will IPNB inform your case conceptualization and your interventions? How will your faith inform your IPNB?
This paper should be five-pages maximum (not including title page and references), formatted and written in APA style. You should use headings for the different sections you write about. The paper should include:
  • Introduction of the client. Describe Susan using only the information in The Case of Susan
  • Provide your analysis/case conceptualization of Susan from a neuroscience and psychosocial perspective
  • Describe a general plan to work with Susan and goals you would set to work with her from an interpersonal neurobiology perspective
  • Provide interventions (from the course materials) you would use to work with Susan
  • Discuss any potential areas where you are aware of your own need for growth to support your client, from a mindful therapist perspective
  • Provide a summary of how you would work with Susan using what you have learned about being a mindful therapist.  Where might you be challenged to remain fully present?
  • Make sure that every statement that is not your own is cited (it is only your own if you have done the original research!). You may have an opinion, but you must support your opinion from the literature. (100 points)

The Case of Susan
Susan was belittled by her emotionally distant mother her whole life. She reports that she was a poor student and was always getting in trouble for not paying attention. When she was 14, her father, who was the one who helped her most with homework, died suddenly of a heart attack. As an adult, Susan, now 58 years old suffers from low self-esteem, and high anxiety when she is around people, though she desperately wants friends. She over-functions in the few relationships that she has and is often hurt and disappointed in her relationships. Physically she is overweight and lethargic. She often stays in the house and gets little exercise. She has come to counseling because she is depressed and says that nothing matters anymore. She says that she believes in God, but he doesn’t seem to care either.
Analyze Susan’s experience from a neurological, social, physical, and spiritual perspective.
  • What is happening (or not happening) in her brain and embodied mind? (Be very thorough here, incorporating as much neuroscience information that applies…show me what you learned!).
  • What would be some treatment goals for her care?
  • What interventions might you suggest?
  • Are there ways that Susan might trigger unpleasant feelings in you?
  • How might you apply IPNB understanding and skills to help you stay mindful?
