Unity, Variety, Repetition

Often, these principles of design complement one another. For example, in Jacob Lawrence’s Going Home, the repetition of visual themes, such as green chairs and window shades and red shapes, create a sense of unity and variety by providing both an organizing structure and varied lines and shapes.

In the painting Interior of a Dutch House, Pieter de Hooch also repeats rectangles and squares in various shapes and sizes to create unity and variety.

Select an artwork from another chapter in the textbook that also uses repetition, unity, and variety. Describe and analyze how the artist uses these principles of design to shape the appearance and meaning of the composition. Then, compare your selected artwork to Jacob Lawrence’s Going Home and Pieter de Hooch’s Interior of a Dutch House.
