Instructions for the Peer Review
- For the first sentence of your peer review, write a general statement of what works well in the paper and what needs some attention.
- Identify the thesis statement in your partner’s paper and restate it in your own words.
- Comment on the strength of the thesis statement. Is it an argument rather than just summative? Does it address the effectiveness of the author’s rhetorical strategies?
- Take a look at the body paragraphs. Do they have strong topic sentences that clearly identify what the paragraph will be about? Do the paragraphs provide supportive evidence to back up the claims being made by your partner?
- Does your partner’s paper analyze the essay rather than merely summarizing it?
- Has your partner effectively identified the rhetorical strategies used by the author and why the author may have made the choice to use those particular strategies? Does your partner provide examples to illustrate those rhetorical strategies?
- Is the level of diction used by your partner appropriate for an academic paper? Do they effectively incorporate quotes and follow them up with an explanation of how the quote relates to the point they are making?
- Is the paper correctly formatted according to MLA guidelines? Does it have a correct Works Cited page? Are parenthetical citations included when necessary and correctly formatted?
- Are there any major grammatical or mechanical errors?
- Be willing to quote the paper to support the points that you are making regarding the questions above.
Please note that your peer review should be a minimum of 2 paragraphs and peer reviews that simply cover surface grammatical error without examining the substance of the paper will not receive much credit.
