Ethics in Research Assignment

Introduction:

Nursing researchers are confronted with ethical decisions when working with vulnerable populations. It is important, therefore, that nurses know how to analyze a bio-ethical issue based on nursing ethical values, principles, and facts in order not only to make ethical decisions about their research but will also aid in maintaining ethical nursing practice.

Released in 1979 by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the  presents three basic ethical principles that underlie biomedical and behavioral research involving human subjects:

  1. Respect for persons  Individuals should be treated as autonomous, and those with diminished autonomy (due to illness, dementia, etc.) are entitled to protection.
  2. Beneficence  People should be treated in an ethical manner not only by respecting their decisions and protecting them from harm, but also by making efforts to secure their well-being.
  3. Justice  This relates to receiving the benefits of research or bearing its burdens. An injustice occurs when a person is denied without good reason some benefit to which they are entitled or when some burden is unduly imposed.

Preparing for the assignment:

Review this video from the Office for Human Research Protections:

Scenario:

Nurse M and Nurse C have been working on a research project studying the incidence of hospital-acquired infections in the nursing unit. Nurse M learns that while Nurse C is interviewing the research participants, he failed to obtain informed consent on two of the participants but proceeds with the interviews. Nurse M also discovers that while interviewing, Nurse C invents and answers when he is unable to get one during the interview and passes it off as truthful data collection. Nurse M questions Nurse C and the allegation is denied. What should Nurse M do?
