Annotated Bibiliography: Oregon Trail
The Oregon Trail is one of the most well known and dynamic routes in the United States. Westward expansion was promising for European settlers and the lure of land and gold couldn’t be ignored. Although the largest wagon trains didn’t leave Independence, Missouri until the 1850’s, the first (1,000 man) wagon train left Missouri in 1843 and made it to Oregon six months later. The Oregon Trail was not for the faint of heart as it was nearly impossible to complete alone, travelled through harsh and changing climates, crossed into competing Indian territory and every one of the 2,170 miles could be a settlers last. The Oregon Trail, as treacherous and it was, was necessary for westward expansion and inevitable growth of New America.
