My Values
Equal opportunity for all in the workforce, education, basic needs food and shelter.
These values come from having a big family and caring about their well being. I have carried this value into my profession as a housing case manager for homeless families. I assist clients by informing them of different resources that are available and will provide them with the opportunities they need to live better lives. Growing up poor with a big family I watched family members receive the opportunity of public assistance as a stepping stone. This assistance allowed members of my family to have their basic needs food and shelter while given the opportunity to become educated then abstain successful careers.
I am a very motivated person who likes to set goals and achieve them. I can see how that can cause a conflict with my personal values and professional values because although I am providing clients with resources that can get them get through barriers they might not be motivated enough to even seek the resources. I can see myself as a social worker wanting something for a client more than they want it for themselves. My approach with dealing with such situation is to meet the client where they are in order to better understand what is causing them to not have the motivation to achieve their goals.
Another conflict between my personal and professional values is that I am a very giving person and that could possibly lead to me enabling clients to expect me to do things for them that they should be doing for themselves. The approach I take on this is to be self awafstre when of when taking on responsibilities.
