Theoretical Critique Assignment
A goal of this assignment is to help you further understand criminological theory by offering an in depth critique. A critique is an evaluation of how a theory came to be, why it has come into existence, and how well the theory is evidenced. The theory used in this paper should be different from that of your chapter presentation.
Part 1 (40 points): You must first become familiar with your chosen theory. You must write a brief literature review on the theory. This must include:
1) Summary of historical theoretical contribution to the field of criminology
2) Major theorists
3) Basic propositions and causal arguments
4) Empirical research testing these arguments
5) Theory’s contemporary usage/popularity within criminology
You will have to consult sources in addition to your textbook and reader. Your textbook can be used as a source, but you must paraphrase and not quote. You are limited to only one Internet resource (it should not be your main source). You must use a minimum of two scholarly resources.
Part 2 (50 points): After reviewing the theory, you must offer a critical analysis. Beware, this is not based on your opinion, but evaluates the theory from an objective standpoint. You should frame this viewpoint using scholarly resources in addition to your text book. Generally, this critique should include (but not limited to):
1) Strengths of the premise, methods, conclusions, arguments, assumptions
2) Weaknesses of premise, methods, conclusions, arguments, assumptions
3) Alternativetheory that addresses the weaknesses
Formatting (10 points): Papers should be written in APA style and 3-5 pages in length (not including references). Include cover page, citation page, and honesty statement.
