Case Study Analysis: The Case of Three Teens
Around 2:00 a.m. Nick (age 15) and his friends, Michael (age 16) and Erick (age 19) decided to “borrow” his neighbors’ car, get drunk, and drive to the next suburb over. For no apparent reason, they parked the car in a gas station lot and began to walk along a major road with office buildings. Soon, they started throwing small rocks toward buildings and began breaking windows. After they realized the significant amount of damage that had resulted, they decided to leave and walk back to their vehicle. As they were entering their “borrowed” vehicle, they were stopped by the police.
In 1 – 2 pages, identify the crimes you feel have been committed. Make sure you differentiate between status and delinquent offenses. You will need to conduct research to determine the age at which someone is considered a minor in the state of Illinois. Be certain to summarize your findings. What types of penalties do you think should be imposed? Is this scenario indicative of some trends we are currently seeing amongst juvenile offenders? Be certain to explain your answers.
