The lesson for this week explains that we will be discussing the five types of international actors in this class:

states

intergovernmental organizations (IGOs)

nongovernmental organizations (NGOs)

multinational corporations (MNCs)

networks and non-state actors

To learn about these, click on Lessons and then select “Week 1: What is IR?” Then click on “Lesson” and “launch lesson” There you can learn about the types of actors and see examples.

Question for Week 1:

Explore the international issues listed in the Global Governance Monitor. Pick one issue. These are issues that affect many states and peoples at once. In your forum post, describe the issue and then tell us which of the five types of actors might be the key to solving the problem. Do you see states, IGOs, NGOs, MNCs, or networks as the best group to address the issue? You may wish to include specific examples or highlight more than one type of actor. There is no “right” answer to this question — it’s about brainstorming!
